Kitchen by Mike is the understated name of a cafe in the Sydney suburb of Rosebery that I visited for a quick breakfast and later for lunch.
I like the name but signage is lacking outside. I walked toward it from the lower number end of the street – it is at 85 Dunning Street and I came from 77 Dunning and saw 2 fully closed red doors and finally one opened red door. One of the former red doors had a splattered coffee on the doorstep so I was beginning to think it was the cafe and it was closed.
Once inside I found that the red closed doors were connected to the adjoining Koskela shop and gallery. I came for a small breakfast as I was headed to a natural light food photography workshop nearby and did not want a full stomach. The almond croissant was a little burnt but its frangipane (almond cream) filling inside was still moist. The coffee was excellent.Three grinders that I could see from my table indicates choice of coffee.
The shop sells some wood crafts for the home from Tasmania, being a half time Tasmanian I was quick to note that. There is gardening apparel and equipment for the well-heeled Boho in us. For anyone still wondering….. Boho is anything influenced from the hippie and bohemian, its zenith in the early nineties and still seems to survive as a descriptive term. It was in Paris that I came to fully understand the term when my Parisian friend referred to me as Boho as I liked to shop at the organic food market on Sundays known as Le Marché Raspail.
This really sums up the entire shop as it is filled with art books, cook books and other lifestyle books. The main display has Koskela designed bespoke furniture – you can design the finishes, and coverings with the store so you have some input. There is currently an exhibition of aboriginal woven art and sculptural pieces and there is even play equipment and furniture for children. You would be best to look up the link as they aim to cover just about all the markets, even a holiday house to let is filled with their Koskela furniture and lifestyle products.

Before I finish I must tell you that I did return for lunch after the photography class, by the way I furtively took these with an old iPhone camera so they are appalling compared to the proper camera I own and new skills acquired at the workshop.
The lunch I did not photograph, it just did not look wonderful on the plate, we had a slice of the huge pizza that we saw come out of the oven as we lined up for service, and a plate of a tasty roasted vegetable salad. By the time we were able to pay for the lunch though the pizza was almost cold but I must add it was the type of pizza that I like, good crisp crust and not laden with too much filling or overdone with cheese. My main constructive comments are for the system of ordering hot food and having it sit there on the bench whilst the staff continue to serve those before you, having their dessert choice plated, drinks and coffee fetched took up so much time. Does anyone want a coffee at the same time as the meal, I don’t think so but they seem to order it to save lining up again and risking losing their table. So that is a service glitch they should address. In the breakfast time slot, I went up to the counter, ordered my breakfast and took it back to the table whilst they gave me a number and delivered my coffee hot later. Anyone having a hot breakfast also had it delivered. This was so much more efficient.
